NC Mountains Becoming Popular Filming Destination

 

From reports of Diane Keaton roaming around Black Mountain and Asheville to Asheville’s first-ever Hallmark Movie, “A Biltmore Christmas” — our area has become a more popular filming destination.

Here is a snapshot of film projects that are newly available or currently in production in the area.

 

Available Now

 

The Peripheral | This time-bending science fiction thriller series goes between London and the Blue Ridge Mountains and filmed a ton of its scenes in Marshall. It debuted at the end of 2022 — watch season one on Amazon Prime.

Black in Asheville | This film explores the Black experience of Asheville, from the Antebellum period to the Civil War to the modern-day. See a screening at Black Wall Street on Friday, May 26 at 6 p.m. as part of GrindFest.

Summer Camp

Starring Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Eugene Levy and Beverly D’Angelo, this feature film follows the story of three childhood best friends who return for an adult summer camp reunion. It’s currently filming in Hendersonville.

 

A Biltmore Christmas

This holiday movie stars a modern-day screenwriter Lucy as she’s hired to write the script for a remake of a holiday movie. She joins a tour of the grounds and when she knocks an hourglass over, she finds herself transported back in time to 1946. The film is set at Biltmore, with plenty of ensuing romance. It’s expected to debut in November 2023.

 

Shadow of a Wheel

This documentary from Bonesteel Films chronicles the story of the 31 kids who biked across the country in 1982.  This is the true story of regular American teenagers who came together that summer to share the journey of a lifetime and were transformed in the process. These “Spokesmen of America” set out to raise money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis and experienced a summer filled with intense challenges, humor, mishaps, personal discovery and tragedy. . It premieres on PBS on Thursday, July 6.  

 

Bloom!

This animated short from Asheville director Zachary Gladwin follows the story of a young teen who awakes from a hypnotic trance in a strange land and seeks to escape his lonely existence.  The film explores themes of curiosity, failure, and perseverance. 

 

 

We are not new to the movie industry; our beautiful North Carolina mountains appear in many movies. The first movie shot in Asheville was in the 1920s the Conquest of Canaan the movie was filmed in what is now Pack Square in downtown Asheville and tells the story of a lawyer who makes good in a small town.

 

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This 2018 Oscar-winning film is about a small-town mother confronting local police as to why there are still no answers in regard to the death of her teenage daughter. Filming took place in Jackson and Buncombe counties

 

Masterminds

Masterminds movie filmed in the Asheville area during the summer of 2014 and released in 2016. A guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history. Based on the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery. 

 

A Walk in the Woods

Robert Redford’s 2015 adaption of Bill Bryson’s best-selling novel is about hiking the Appalachian Trail and included some scenery from North Carolina. After spending two decades in England, Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) returns to the U.S., where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends, Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte).

 

The Hunger Games

The first The Hunger Games released in 2012 filmed at several locations in western North Carolina. Fans flocked to our area from around the world to see some of the film locations. Henry River Village and mill area which had been abandoned since the 1970s.  Came to life as the movie was filmed and is now a great place to go visit.
