5 Fun Hobbies You Can Start This Winter at Home

Winter is a time for coziness and relaxation; it’s also a great time to start a new hobby. The days are colder especially here in the mountains of Western NC, in Black Mountain.  You may not always feel like going outside so why not pick up a new hobby  you can do at home this winter in the comfort of your own home. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started.

Knit or crochet.

Knitting and crocheting are two hobbies that are perfect for wintertime. Not only are they relaxing, but they also give you the opportunity to make something special! Stop by the Black Mountain Yarn Shop to get pointed in the right direction and you will be surprised at how quickly you can churn out beanies, scarves, and gloves once you get the hang of it!

Try your hand at painting.

Trust me you don’t have to be an artist to pick up a paintbrush and get busy, my friend Krista and I are always channeling our inner Picasso and trying something new, even when it turns out not so great, we still have fun! If you want to go freehand, there are plenty of painting kits with everything you need to get started or if you are a little unsure where to start a paint-by-numbers set is a great first option. So, invite your friends, put out the wine and cheese, and get painting.

Bake bread from scratch.

Nothing says winter like the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through your home. And while it may seem daunting at first, baking bread from scratch is actually quite simple—and well worth the effort. Start with this easy recipe for no-knead bread, then experiment with different flour varieties, add-ins (like fruit or nuts), and shapes (baguettes, rolls, etc.) until you find a combination that you love. Serve your homemade bread warm with butter or make yourself a sandwich for lunch—either way, you’ll be glad you took the time to learn this tasty skill.

Make your own soap and candles.

Candles and soaps make great gifts and are lots of fun too. Who doesn’t love the added ambiance that candles provide, and we all need soap! Here is a great resource with instructions and everything you need to know to get started.

Start writing.

Whether you’re journaling about your day-to-day experiences or working on a fictional story, writing can be a great way to escape from reality and enter into a world of your own creation. It’s also a great way to organize your thoughts. If you feel like you’re constantly being bombarded by a million different things, sitting down and brainstorming for even just five minutes can help you to sort through everything that’s going on in your head.

There’s no need to let your hobbies slide just because winter has arrived—with a little creativity, you can easily find ways to continue enjoying them from the comfort of your own home.
