Two Wheels and Local Brews: A Guide to Mountain Biking Around Black Mountain
There’s a specific kind of dirt waiting for you just outside of Black Mountain. If you talk to anyone around here who rides, they’ll tell you that the local ridges offer some of the most rewarding—and occasionally punishing—biking on the East Coast.
For a long time, riding in the Pisgah area meant one thing: loading up your pack for a grueling, all-day backcountry ride that required serious navigation skills and legs of steel.
Lately, though, things have changed in a big way. While those wild, root-filled ridge lines are still right outside our back door, the valley has expanded to include modern, purpose-built bike parks. Now you can bring the kids, dial in your skills, and grab an incredible meal all in one spot.
Whether you’re looking to push your limits on famous singletrack or just want a fun family afternoon by the river, here is how to ride like a local.
The Game-Changer: Foothills Watershed in Old Fort
The Vibe: A 117-acre riverside hangout, bike park, and foodie destination all rolled into one.
Located just ten minutes down the mountain from downtown Black Mountain, Foothills Watershed has completely flipped the script on what a bike park can be. Created by the local team behind Foothills Local Meats, the goal here was simple: build a spot where die-hard riders and the rest of the family don’t have to split up to do what they love.
-
For the Riders: Tucked into a private forest, you’ll find 10 purpose-built trails packed with hardpacked clay flow lines, progressive jump lines, and technical rock features designed entirely around skill progression. You can lap the lines over and over to get your flow dialed in.
-
For the Kids & Beginners: There’s a huge 10,000-square-foot dirt pump track and a dedicated tot track specifically for balance bikes.
-
The Hangout: If you aren’t riding, you can grab a lawn chair right on the banks of the Catawba River, play yard games, or cool off in the natural pond.
-
The Food & Beer: This isn’t generic concession stand food. They serve up a killer full menu featuring pasture-raised smash burgers and house-smoked BBQ using local meats right out of Black Mountain. Plus, they have a small-batch, in-house craft brewery right on display from the taproom.
The Traditional Pisgah Ridges
If you’re an experienced rider looking for that classic, rugged Western North Carolina trail experience, you still have the heavy-hitters right down the road.
Kitsuma Peak
- The Ride: You’ll start with a tough climb up 14 tight, steep switchbacks. Clearing the whole climb without putting a foot down is a major badge of honor around here. Once you crest the ridge and take in the view of the surrounding peaks, you’re rewarded with a screaming, high-speed singletrack descent through the trees that finishes near the Old Fort picnic area.
Heartbreak Ridge
- The Ride: This is a true backcountry bucket-list trail that drops over 2,000 vertical feet. It’s tight, fast, and closely lined by thick mountain laurel. While it’s less about massive boulders and more about speed, the off-camber roots and sudden dips mean you have to stay sharp the entire way down.
Quick Tips for the Trail
- Mind the Weather: Our local dirt holds up incredibly well, but backcountry trails can get slick after a heavy mountain rain. Bike parks like the Watershed use hard-packed clay that handles weather beautifully, but it’s always smart to check local trail conditions online before you spin out.
- Gear Up Locally: If you need to rent a high-end full-suspension bike, an E-bike, or just need to grab some extra tubes and trail maps, stop by Epic Cycles right on Black Mountain Avenue. They’re the neighborhood experts and will point you in the right direction.
Keep an Eye on the Horizon
The two-wheeled scene here is growing fast. If you’re planning a trip for later in the year, keep your eyes on Swannanoa. Come Fall 2026, the historic Beacon Mill site is set to open Beacon Park, which will feature a massive, fully paved Velosolutions pump track and all-wheel skill facility right in the heart of the valley.
Load up the bikes, bring an appetite, and get out on the dirt!
