Modern Flow Trails: The Old Fort Gateway System
Located just 10-15 minutes down the mountain, this newly developed, multi-million dollar trail network features professionally engineered, machine-built trails perfect for riders who love smooth flow, berms, and progressive features.
-
Gateway Trailhead: Ample parking and a modern layout, this system is the absolute best place in the region for beginners, families, and intermediate riders to get comfortable with Pisgah riding.
-
The Riding: Expect beautifully graded climbs and fast, smooth downhills with excellent drainage. Unlike the traditional, root-choked backcountry trails, these are designed for pure, flowing speed.
Iconic Singletrack & Epic Ridges
For experienced riders looking for traditional Pisgah terrain—steep climbs, technical rock gardens, root drops, and long, wild descents.
Kitsuma Peak Trail
-
The Climb: Starts gently near I-40 before launching straight up 14 infamous switchbacks that will test your legs and lungs. Clearing all 14 without putting a foot down is a local badge of honor.
-
The Reward: After the grueling climb, a beautiful ridge line rewards you with stunning views of Mount Mitchell before plunging into a legendary, high-speed descent down to the Old Fort Picnic Area.
Heartbreak Ridge
-
The Plunge: A true bucket-list trail that drops over 2,000 vertical feet in just 4 miles.
-
The Terrain: Fast straightaways constricted tightly by encroaching laurel and rhododendron. While less rocky than deep Pisgah trails, it features technical root sections, shallow rock drops, and off-camber slopes that demand your full attention at high speeds.
Star Gap (TR 209)
-
The Link: A classic, technical connector. Accessed from Mill Creek Road via Graphite Road (crossing the railroad tracks), it gains elevation immediately into the woods. It is commonly used to link the bottom of Kitsuma to the base of Heartbreak Ridge for an epic multi-trail loop.
Youngs Ridge
-
Distance: 3.5 miles | Elevation Gain: ~1,800 feet
-
The Ride: Connecting the Old Fort Picnic Area to the summit of Kitsuma Peak, this trail is incredibly steep—with the bulk of the elevation crammed into the first 2 miles. Note: This is a multi-use trail; always keep an eye out and yield to hikers.
Backcountry Gravel & Connectors
For gravel grinders, adventure riders, or those looking to string together massive loops.
Jarrett Creek Road (FS 4030)
-
The Vibe: A gated US Forest Service dirt road that offers a deep, remote backcountry feel with zero vehicular traffic.
-
How to use it: Because it stays gated year-round, grass grows down the middle, making it feel almost like wide singletrack in sections. It is a fantastic, steady climb or descent to use as a connector over to Curtis Creek Road, or to stack extra vertical feet on a long ride up toward Mount Mitchell.
Future Spotlight: Beacon Park (Swannanoa, NC) – Opening Fall 2026
-
Currently transforming the historic 4.7-acre former Beacon Blanket Mill site in downtown Swannanoa, this non-profit legacy project by the Beacon Foundation will soon host the largest all-wheel bike facility of its kind in North and South America – Beacon Bike Park.
-
Engineered by Velosolutions (a global leader in urban bike infrastructure), the park will feature premium paved-surface pump tracks, slopestyle lines, and jump lines.
-
Accessibility: Because it’s fully paved, it’s uniquely built to accommodate a massive variety of wheels—including mountain bikes, dirt jumpers, skateboards, inline skates, and adaptive wheelchairs.
-
Bonus Amenities: The community-centric park will also feature professional-grade outdoor bouldering walls, a 1-mile perimeter walking loop, a bike pavilion, and a massive event lawn for concerts and festivals. Keep this on your radar for your Fall 2026 travel planning!
