A New Place to Gather: White Horse Black Mountain Launches Daytime Community Hub

If you’ve ever stepped inside White Horse Black Mountain at night, you know the room has a distinct magic. The lights are low, the acoustics are world-class, and the energy from the stage brings the entire audience together.

Now, that incredible space is opening its doors to the community during the day.

Starting this year, White Horse is transforming into a daytime Community Hub, welcoming locals and visitors three days a week to connect, create, and share space. While the programming is thoughtfully designed with our local senior residents in mind, the invitation is open to absolutely everyone—from young families to neighbors visiting from neighboring Swannanoa.

Bridging a Gap in Our Community

The inspiration for the Community Hub came from a deeply rooted local need. Following the devastating impacts of Tropical Storm Helene, Black Mountain’s beloved Lakeview Center suffered significant damages, temporarily displacing many of the town’s senior activities.

Seeing the need for a welcoming space where neighbors could gather, the team at White Horse stepped in. Backed by a supportive grant, focused on active living, they have designed a regular daytime schedule to offer a vibrant, creative sanctuary right in the heart of town.

This new hub isn’t replacing the town’s official senior programming; rather, it’s an exciting expansion of how Black Mountain takes care of and celebrates its residents. Because the venue features a premier stage, high-end sound system, and spacious layout, it offers a completely unique environment for daytime events.

What’s on the Schedule?

The Community Hub is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Even if you just want to drop in, sit down, and read a book or chat with a friend, the doors are open. However, if you are looking for structured activities, White Horse has partnered with local organizations and artists to bring a brilliant lineup of events to life:

  • Art Workshops: Creative, hands-on sessions hosted in partnership with the local Red House.

  • Educational Music & Performance: Live musical lectures and history sessions, kicking off with regional favorites like Donna Ray Norton.

  • Documentary & Film Screenings: Curated documentary features and silent films accompanied by a live pianist.

  • Wellness & Holistic Health: Specialized pop-up workshops focusing on acupuncture, Reiki, and mindful living.

Shaping the Future: The creators of the hub want the community to truly own the space. At the end of activities, attendees are encouraged to share feedback via quick surveys so the programming can adapt to exactly what the community wants to see next.

The Community Hub is funded in part by a generous grant from the American Red Cross.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the American Red Cross for recognizing the vital link between community gathering spaces and long-term disaster recovery. Following the hardships brought by Tropical Storm Helene, their timely support has been instrumental in turning this vision into a reality. By funding spaces like the Community Hub, the Red Cross is helping to restore not just the infrastructure of our valley, but the spirit, connection, and well-being of the people who call it home.

This project stands as a beautiful testament to what can happen when national relief efforts join hands with local hearts.
